How much snow is there in the mountains?

This has been a very good year of mountain snow which feeds the streams and Basin this spring and summer. Just how good is partially seen by the snowplows trying to open the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park where there’s 25 feet (yes, 25 FEET) of snow to move! The Park Service’s projected road opening date for the East Entrance is May 9. I don’t know about you, but I really appreciate and applaud their efforts! It appears we have weeks of high country winter to enjoy snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling and winter animal watching before the fishing and camping begin! What a place to be…we’ve got it all, right here!

About Jyl Duffy

I love being a REALTOR and Office Administrator for Johnson Home and Land. There's no place like home here in Wyoming. This is home even though I enjoyed living in Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Carolina previously. With my husband, Dave, when we're not busy working we enjoy our Christian activities and being out of doors fly fishing, camping, golfing or snow shoeing. Wyoming is the best place to be for our active outdoor lifestyle.

We are well beyond snow now, and I’m ready to plant some flower seeds. The azaleas are blooming, the violets and bleeding hearts as well. The lily of the valley have multiplied tremendously over the winter, and are beginning to bloom – lovely smell! But first, need to make some kaleidoscopes!

The East entrance to Yellowstone is open as of May 2, a week before scheduled! Kudos to our hard working Park road maintenance employees. The park is fascinating this time of year. While you have bison ambling down the road all year, right now you also get to see the newborn calves. We saw 4 newborns with their families Saturday! Old Faithful was looking good, too! If you can’t get there in person soon, click on our Yellowstone link for a live webcam peek!
