HOPE

Last week I attended a Town Hall Meeting for Hope, hosted by Dave Ramsey. To any of you who heard about it or attended….this may seem like old news. The truth is that it has taken me most of the week to absorb all of what Dave spoke about. There were 6000 web cast locations , and over a MILLION viewers, making this the largest web cast ever.

Dave is an economist, a realist and an optimist. His intellect and experience give his audience a sense of confidence in the accuracy of his message. He has studied capitalism and it’s cycles for many years. His philosophy is that Americans have gotten a little “fat and sassy” in the past few decades and many of us have gotten into some pretty questionable financial habits. Actually Dave doesn’t say questionable…..he says “stupid!” I say questionable because he is not very diplomatic and I am. 😉

Our location in Powell actually had technical difficulties so we did not get to see the end of the web cast. There is so much so say about this program that I could go on and on. Instead I will give you a few of Dave’s one-liners I particularly liked.

  • When the tide goes out….you can tell who’s skinny dippin’
  • Any turkey can fly in a tornado
  • Failure is a good, it’s corrective, it’s cleansing and it will chase you to excellence
  • The word “NO” will set you free
  • We need to go back to personal responsibility
  • This is the best time to buy a house in 30 years
  • Fear breeds panic and panic breeds hysteria

I share many of the same opinions as Dave but I learned a great deal too. Even on the issues I was already aware of, he has such a unique way of articulating and expressing himself that I feel more confident in the hope of the future.

I also attended Dave Ramsey’s Tall Hall Meeting. It was inspiring, motivating, and humbling. I also share in his philosophy and would encourage anyone who’s interested in finances to look into what he has to say. I recently took a Financial Peace University class from Dave Ramsey. If you are in the market for a house but finances are a concern his courses can definitely be beneficial. I am already a homeowner and I learned some things that will help me to pay off my mortgage much sooner. Just my two cents worth. Thanks

Sounds like I missed out. Did he say anything about re-financing, tax strategies, or smart equity usage? I have 1 primary residence, 2 rentals and 6 acres of raw land. I always wonder if I have my best foot forward when it comes to how I have the finances set up.

    Hi Ronda-
He didn’t talk much about those things at this meeting but I think he covers most of them in his book, “The Total Money Makeover.” All his books are on sale for $10 just go to his web site….but you have to use a debit card 😉

This meeting was mostly about the difference between the facts of the economy vs. the fiction of the media. Thanks for the comment

I too appreciate Dave Ramsey and his financial advice. I have recently been receiving a newsletter that features a short column weekly on questions people have asked him and his answers to them. I enjoy his frankness and his wisdom very much. I’ll bet the Town Meeting was awesome. I’m glad you got to attend.

I’d love to be on his newsletter list. How’d you get signed up for that?

I love Dave. I have recently taken his debt free class and have started on my way to being debt free. The one thing that has really worked for me is “it hurts to spend cash”. It is so true. I find myself really questioning how bad I need something now. He does have lots to say and so much to take in but remember “BABY STEPS”.
